Five Fun Facts about the Gramercy Theatre

On October 19, Law Rocks will once again take the stage at the Gramercy Theatre for the 8th Annual Law Rocks New York City - a sold-out show! This beloved venue has been home to Law Rocks NYC for 8 years, and today we're celebrating its rich history with 5 fun facts about the Gramercy Theatre:

1) The theater was built in 1937 and was originally a movie theater and art-house rather than a live music venue.

2) The building was designed in the “Streamline Moderne” style, which is a form or Art Deco architecture inspired by aerodynamic design.

3) The theater was originally called “Gramercy Park Theatre,” to avoid confusion with another movie theater of the same name. Once the rival theater closed in the 1950s, the Gramercy Theatre dropped the “Park” from its name.

4) In the late 1990s, the theater transitioned from showing movies to hosting Off-Broadway plays. In 2006, the venue was purchased by Live Nation and transitioned again into a music venue. However, the venue still retains some seating from its time as a theater.

5) Music History: Gramercy Theatre is the site of the music video for the The Fugees’ iconic single “Killing Me Softly.”
