Judges’ Choice Award: The Latent Defects rocking for Family Violence Appellate Project with legal talent from Greenberg Traurig, Baker Botts, K&L Gates, and Perkins Coie

After nearly three years, Law Rocks finally returned to the Bay Area for the Eighth Annual Law Rocks San Francisco. It was an exciting night for all who attended! Four bands of legal rock stars took the stage at The Chapel to raise funds for their favorite nonprofits.

The night opened with veteran band Morgan, Lewis & ROCKius, featuring legal talent from the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and rocking for Child Advocates of Silicon Valley. ROCKius took the stage with a 12 piece ensemble and played an energetic mix of 60s and 70s pop and soul with a dash of modern pop splashed in for fun. They energized the audience and set the tone for an awesome night.

Next up was Law Rocks San Francisco original, 12th Root of Two, raising funds for two local nonprofits, Blue Bear School of Music and St. Anthony's. Featuring legal talent from Hanson Bridgett; Kessenick, Gamma and Free; and Peter Logan Law Offices, 12th Root of Two has played every San Francisco show since our inaugural show in 2012. An expertly blended set of songs from English and American rock legends kept the crowd on their feet and singing along.

Before the third band, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin delighted the crowd with a surprise appearance! He greeted the audience with a message of gratitude for all the fundraising and community impact of the amazing nonprofits.

Next, The Latent Defects, another veteran band, brought us into the 2000's with hits from Billy Eilish and Amy Winehouse, but still kept the throwback energy alive with Under Pressure by Queen, a Foo Fighters tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins, and an unexpected mash-up of Garth Brooks and AC/DC. Featuring legal talent from Baker Botts; Greenberg Traurig; K&L Gates; and Perkins Coie they fundraised for Family Violence Appellate Project.

Our fourth and final band, Flight Risk, played our virtual concert, Lawrockspalooza, but took to the Law Rocks stage for the fist time for this show. Featuring legal talent from Baker Botts, LLP and fundraising for Neal Casal Music Foundation, they performed an stellar set. Singers traded off for a commanding performance of rock and pop songs, including a Queen/Flo Rida mash-up and a delightfully targeted performance of Lawyers Guns and Money. They ended the night with a soulful rendition of Rehab that had the entire audience singing along.

Amazing fundraising efforts were made by all, but it was powerhouse Morgan, Lewis and ROCKius who scored the highest points overall to take home the championship plaque. The Latent Defects' electric performance scored them the Judges' Choice Award.

Flight Risk is proud to support the Neal Casal Music Foundation to provide instruments and lessons to youth musicians and mental health services to musicians in need.

Rocking for Family Violence Appellate Project

Formed in 2017, The Latent Defects (f.k.a. Attractive Nuisance) are proud to return at Law Rocks for the third time! The band, which managed to win “Judges Choice” in two of their last three performances, was formed as Greenberg Traurig’s house band and now includes a Verein of weekend warriors from five different law firms all flying a united banner of rock. This band goes to 11 and they are psyched to be with the people again.

Rock Judge, Tony Berman

Tony Berman is the founder of Berman Entertainment and Technology Law, a law firm focusing on issues implicated by the convergence of technology and the entertainment industry. His primary practice areas involve negotiation of entertainment contracts and advising clients on legal issues involved in the formation of entertainment-related organizations and protection of copyrights and trademarks. His clients include record companies, multimedia companies, app developers, game companies, online content distribution companies, professional sport organizations, management companies, film and television production companies, presenters of live entertainment, music venues, publishers, producers, technologists and industry executives as well as writers, performers and artists.

Tony is the editor-in-chief of Multimedia & Entertainment Law Online News (MELON) and a contributing editor to Entertainment Industry Contracts, published by Matthew Bender. He is also an adjunct professor at Golden Gate University School of Law where he teaches Negotiating and Drafting Contracts in the Entertainment Business.

Tony has served on the board of governors of The Recording Academy San Francisco Chapter and the AFTRA Advisory Board of Managers and Attorneys. He was the chair of the Sports and Entertainment Law Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco from 1998 through 1999.

Rock Judge, Phoenix Song

Phoenix Song is a queer, nonbinary Korean American adoptee performer, teacher and sound healer featured in San Francisco Magazine's Best of the Bay for yoga music. Phoenix has performed and taught at SF Jazz, Esalen, Wanderlust, UC Santa Cruz, SF International Arts Festival, and more. They are a Tamalpa Associate Teacher of Expressive Arts and completed Level 3 of Somatic Voicework, the Lovetri Method. They delight in freeing people's voices and rhythms so that they can sing, sound, and speak their truths with confidence. Phoenix plays didgeridoo, djembe, Arabic tambourine, Native flute, esraj, harmonica, harmonium, and more. Rock Judge, Andrew Thomases

Andrew Thomases is an Intellectual Property lawyer by day, and an independent recording artist by night. In his day job, Andrew practices IP Litigation in the Silicon Valley office of Ropes & Gray, where he is chair of the IP Litigation practice group and co-chair of the firm’s Technology, Media & Telecom group. Andrew counsels clients in all industries in areas involving patent, copyright, trade secret, and trademark law. His clients run the gamut and include some of the biggest players in the semiconductor, networking, software, video streaming, and medical device fields. He has tried cases all over the United States and has represented clients from around the globe.

At night, he writes, performs, and records his own music. His genre is alternative rock with meaning, which he often refers to as “conscious rock.” His songs spur curiosity and his lyrics ask tough questions about such topics as climate change, division in our country, our impact on other species, and our unending yet harmful quest for perfection. But he also has a humorous side and recently released a song looking back on his antics as a teenager growing up in the New York suburbs. His music style ranges from classic rock, to 80s alternative, to chill rock, and some 90s vibes thrown in for good measure.

Host, Amy McRoberts Rupnow

Amy Rupnow is a host with a background in the performing arts. Hosting events all over the U.S. for brands like Cisco, Coca Cola, Glenlivet and Budweiser, she spent the last six years pre-pandemic presenting for the Acura special events team at auto-show and race events.

Amy is currently the Manager of Marketing and Events at Law Rocks and has no intention of “quitting her day job” as she thoroughly enjoys working for the Law Rocks team.
