On Thursday, December 7, seven talented bands took the stage at the Second Annual Law Rocks Phoenix, a special even in support of Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers. The night opened with surprise guest NeanderPaul from KSLX joining his 100.7 morning show co-host Mark Devine to emcee the first half of the show, bringing humor and energy.
First up was the family band, The Hoodlums. Three musical siblings rocked out with mom and dad, just before bedtime. The lights came down as the 6-year old drummer shouted, "One, two, three, four," to cue the band for their first song. The audience loved the classic 80s covers of Eye of the Tiger and Final Countdown, but the best moment was their rendition of Santa Claus is Coming to Town which included a call for the audience to reach deep in their pockets for donations. Adorable banter and well-timed comedy made the Hoodlums an audience favorite.
Second up was veteran band, the knobs, who energized the audience with their 60s and 70s covers. Their lead singer belted songs from his keyboard while a second percussionist added rhythm from his congas. Songs like China Grove and Gimme Three Steps kept the audience on their feet the whole set.
The third band to take the stage was newcomer Guilty as Sin, who performed like a Law Rocks veteran. The lead singer’s soulful voice complimented a Melissa Etheridge tribute for the opening number and she and the guitarist traded off vocals for the remaining covers of classic 90s ballads and energetic 60s pop.
Reigning champs Retro-Active took the stage next, performing popular classic rock hits. The combination of powerful vocals and technical precision impressed the judges, but they went one step further when they performed a mash-up of songs from our Rock Panel of Judges.
Mark & NeanderPaul tagged in fellow KSLX host, Karen Dalessandro to masterfully host the remainder of the show! She introduced our esteemed Rock Panel of Judges: AK of the band Flotsam and Jetsam, Josh Kennedy of the band The Black Moods, and Law Rocks Rock Panel alum, Zeke Roeser. Later, in a heartfelt moment, Karen interviewed a local teen who shared the mission of Alice Cooper's Solid Rock Teen Centers and how the organization has personally impacted her life.
The fifth band of the evening, Several Dudes, reunited during the pandemic after the tragic loss of one of their former bandmates. They channeled their grief to connect via Zoom to write an entire set of original songs virtually, before performing them in person for the first time in Phoenix.
psych 101 followed suit with a set of original songs. The band name perfectly suited their songs that brought on the ethereal head space of Pink Floyd and Deep Purple in their early psych rock days.
The Desert Rangers closed out the show with upbeat 50s and 60s covers that had the audience back on their feet and even brought a member from the audience on stage to play the tambourine for the rest of the set.
After our judges had time to deliberate the scores and fundraising totals were updated, Retro-Active was announced as the overall winner and the Judges' Choice winner for the night, keeping their title intact. The evening raised $47,500 and broke the fundraising record for Phoenix!
Major thanks to the band members, the crew at Crescent Ballroom, our hosts and Rock Panel, our incredible sponsors, and each and every person who came out to rock. See you next year, Phoenix!
Law Rocks Phoenix 2021 was a special event benefiting Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers. The Rock Teen Center inspires teens (12-20) to grow through music, dance and art. They provide vocational training in sound and recording, lighting and staging, video production, as well as a computer lab and a cool, supervised facility for the teens to engage with their peers. In a time where public schools are cutting funding for empowering programs like music, dance and art, The Rock cultivates a love of the arts to inspire and challenge teens to embrace artistic excellence and reach their full potential. The Rock Teen Centers are FREE and open to all teens 12-20 years old Monday through Friday from 2:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
