Nonprofit Spotlight: Checking in with Willie Mae Rock Camp, Law Rocks NYC - Returning Music Matters Grant Recipient (2026)

A key component of Law Rocks’ mission is to promote youth music education. In 2023, the Law Rocks Board founded the Music Matters grant, given to a local nonprofit that supports youth music education in each of our US tour cities. Omi Crawford, Executive Director of Law Rocks, says of the grant initiative:

“Law Rocks has always been about championing nonprofits, especially local organizations that make a real difference in their community. The Music Matters grant deepens that commitment, helping support music education organizations nationwide as they change young lives through the power of music. It’s inspiring and exciting to learn more about each organizations work, truly one of the best things about this work!”

As we gear up for The 11th Annual Law Rocks NYC, we are pleased to spotlight the first of two 2026 Law Rocks NYC Music Matters Grant recipients: Willie Mae Rock Camp (WMRC)!

This is the fourth Law Rocks Music Matters Grant for WMRC, an organization that “integrates music, technology and STEM to empower girls and gender-expansive youth with the skills and confidence to thrive as creative leaders in a tech-driven future.” We caught up with LaFrae Sci, Executive Director of Willie Mae Rock Camp, who shared some fun updates on what the organization has been up to over the past year.

1) What new successes or milestones have you achieved since we last spoke?

We increased our numbers served year round tuition free, we successfully added and piloted an advanced afterschool tech cohort, we are celebrating the centennial of our namesake, Blues/Rock pioneer, Willie Mae Thornton.

2) Can you share an example of how your programs or initiatives have positively impacted the community in the past year?

For the first time, all of our programs had waiting lists. We are seeking greater community investment to grow and meet the demand.
